Server outage due to Earth Quake ! 26 December 2004
We were informed that the ISP conducting some maintenance and a scheduled 10 minutes outage was done at 9:15 AM, to basically switch off our server and on it back. Not sure why they want to do that, guess they have never heard of UPS. Shortly after that (a couple of hours), even I cant access more than half the internet`s website, testing on my side shown that our country`s main DNS server is down. (cant really confirm this, it could just be the ISP itself). when i tried calling the ISP technical line, they did say the internet is confirm to be down in various places in Malaysia (not very specific). for your knowledge DNS is the techie word for finding where spacefed.com server is. Sadly due to this, even though our server was up but no one was able to get on to it. i am not sure what those people did, maybe someone accidentally switch off the DNS server or something What is currently being done i would like to assure everyone that we have been trying a suitable hosting another country to host a mirror site (duplicate site) so if such things were to happen you can always login to another country. unfortunately we are unable to find one which offers a fixed rate for unlimited bandwidth, let alone one which accepts online games. it seems a lot of hosting companies specially places `we do not accept online games` in their policy or are not very keen on hosting games, due to the frequent abuse (spam, virus, hack, flood, etc), as well as high bandwidth usage. when we find a new mirror hosting, i shall personally announce it to everyone :) Update 3:00 PM 26th Dec it seems that i have been informed that there have been an earth quake which occurred in Indonesia (very near the data center). this could have caused the Internet disruption. of course i am still assuming things here, there is no confirm press release by our ISP (never had, they tend to want to keep it quiet if they are having problems).
